Laura's Exhibition at Stuart Street Potters Co-operative, Dunedin... Coming Soon!

Less than a week to go before her exhibition, and Laura is still painting. It is nice that the studio is humming with activity. I think our Old Post Office building enjoys being a place of work, you can almost imagine several generations of Postmasters nodding approval!

Laura paints in the gallery at the front of the building, the room gets some winter sun, which makes it more cheerful. Occasionally we have visitors who come to look at the pots and paintings, but not many of them at this time of year so interruptions are not too frequent.

People who visit our studio and gallery don't always understand that Laura imagines, designs, draws, cuts out, and paints her own work. That it is her art! Well, here are some photos of her coming up with something fresh and new!

Earlier this year the Stuart Street Potter's Co-op agreed to Laura and I becoming joint members of the Co-op and sharing a display area there. This is a really good opportunity for Laura and myself, and her colourful flat work compliments my more subdued round pots rather well! Laura's exhibition is a "welcoming" exhibition for Laura as a new Co-op member.

At the Co-op Laura sells greetings cards printed from her paintings and drawings. Also she sells smaller more craft orientated pieces, such as Christmas decorations and hanging birdies and hearts, all painted on wood.

For this exhibition in the Co-op window she has painted some larger pieces on the theme of Harlequins and Fish. The exhibition runs from Monday 4 July to Saturday 16 July.

We will be having a mid exhibition opening on Saturday 9 July at 11am with yummy refreshments to which readers of this are warmly invited. It will also be a chance to meet the other members of the Co-op and enjoy looking at our diverse range of work, with a hot cup of coffee in your hands. It would be lovely to see you if you can come.

Oh how I wish I could pop over for the show. I love Laura's work and can see how showing the two of you together is a really smart move. Wishing you wonderful success for the show.

It never ceases to amaze me the unique work Laura does. It's always meticulous, and has depths that the casual eye can easily miss. The examples that hang on our walls are a delight, and I hope that visitors next week will find the same.

Good Evening/Morning Smartcat, Patti, and Dad!
Very nice to hear from you. I read out your comments to Laura (I'm her Private Secretary in the run up to her exhibition!!) And she would like me to say how much she appreciates you writing in with your kind and encouraging thoughts. She wishes that we had a magic carpet to be able to transport you all from one side of the world to the other in no time at all. Whilst you probably won't be able to be at the opening, it is lovely to think of you being there in spirit! :-)

I imagined that she used a jigsaw. Thanks for showing the process. Wish I could see the exhibit.

Best wishes to Laura for her exhibition. Such a shame it's not possible to just pop by and see it. I particularly like the one that I'll call "Carp with Chakras"

I'm involved with a new gallery project here - and guess what? Our grand opening day is July 9th! At least it will be if I stop reading other people's blogs and get on with ordering the last few things we need.

Thank you Melissa and Mike for writing in, I love the "Carp with Chakras" title, Mike, I will pass it on to Laura!!

All a busy whirl here as you can imagine. Laura has most of the artwork painted now, but still varnishing to be done. Most of the work on wood gets a few coats of a clear acrylic varnish to protect it and to bring out the colour. Our big challenge at this time of year is to find a room that is warm enough to varnish in... we will meet that challenge tomorrow, with heaters in one room going on in the early hours of the morning.

Melissa, Laura has been using that hand powered fret saw for years... I did buy her an electric scroll saw a long time ago, but she won't use it... she doesn't like sewing machines either!

Mike, you too involved with an opening on the 9th, all the best for that!

White Rabbit to you both, I love Laura's work so fresh and unique and whimsical, good luck with the exhibit, hope Laura sells out, never heard of a hand powered fret saw. Gary and I were going to make a sign for the front of our house and route out letters but not sure how, we will look on youtube to see if there are any hints. We are in the 90s here, hard to imagine it's cold there but then again our winters are pretty cold too.
I love the whimsy and bright colors of Laura's work. The show is going to be beautiful. Best of luck with your new co-op venture.

Hope it goes well for Laura even if it's not the height of the tourist season

Thank you for your kind comments Linda, Michèle, Armelle, and Anna.
All a mad rush this morning as we will be taking the exhibition to town and hanging the paintings, but lovely to find your words on the blog and know that you are thinking of us! P&L
